. . .The etchings presented here are from an on-going series of work including drawings, prints and paintings inspired by the environment of the northern California coast.
. . .The moody atmospheric light typical of the paintings by Larry Thomas is abruptly sharpened in the etchings by an intense focus on a fine, distinct line steeped in historical reference and reflective of the burnished graphic qualities of the materials used to produce the prints: gravers, etching needles and copper plates.
. . .In certain prints the utilization of spit-bite aquatint washes subtly accentuates the markings of the etched and engraved lines. The abstract tone and texture of the aquatints soften the crispness of the over-printed line plate and synthesize the intricately scribed line with soft, washy tonal transitions – together lending an atmospheric dimension and enriching the prints. |
