WORKSHOPS
Each summer Larry Thomas conducts a drawing workshop at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology located at Cascade Head on the northern Oregon coast. The surrounding pristine natural environment, including a vast protected estuary and an old-growth spruce/hemlock forest, is used as the point of departure for exploring and inspiration. The workshops focus on the structure and deconstruction of large-scale drawing utilizing a broad range of materials and media. Students typically work for three to four long uninterrupted days to develop ideas and explore alternative approaches to their work. Drawings are cut apart, re-assembled, altered and manipulated in order to re-define the experience of observation resulting in new directions and pathways. Critical analysis and discussion of work accomplished in the workshop is an important component of the experience.
